For some reason, my Birthday is the most important day for me.

It has been a really big deal for me for the last 23 years, I'd say. My earliest birthday memory goes all the way back, when on my 4th birthday my best childhood friends from the building, Anya and Masha, came over and my granny made us sandwiches with Moscow kolbasa (sausage). Maybe there was something else, but that's all that I remember.
Next one was a biiiiiiiiiiig celebration for my 6th birthday, broken down into two parties - one for us, kids, at home, and another one for adults, at the banquet hall.
For my 7th Birthday I got a Polaroid camera as a gift. And this, in a way, was an important moment in my development, as I am interested in photography until today.
For years, photos, cards and mementoes have accumulated. And I am such a hoarder, that I still keep some of the cards that I received for my fifth or seventh birthday up until now! A few years ago, I scanned them all as I have this idea to make a family photo book, titled "27 Birthdays", inspired by the movie 27 Dresses.
Have you ever thought, that the exploration of the history of one's birthday makes a separate cultural field of study? From customs and family traditions, to the evolution of fashion, art and design (postcards), photography and even one's psychology? Why do some people love their birthdays so much, and others loathe them? Why do some people want to throw huge extravaganza's like in "My Sweet 16" and others keep it quiet for two? How through a card, that was carefully picked by a friend, we can understand their stage/period in life or their interests? And I am not even talking about evolution of fashion through the photos (either on film or Instagram) that are taken every year....
This year I rented a party room at my friends' condo, decorated it with balloons and got a lot of alcohol. This year's theme was Socializing and Mingling. And if for somebody this sounds like the most basic Canadian celebration, this was my first time ever doing this. In the past years we would either go to the restaurant or do something original, like going to the Aquarium or to the High Tea with my girlfriends. This year I wanted all to come together and have fun. In addition to that, we had the best cake ever! And we had so much fun, that the next morning hangover was totally worth it!
